Massive White Oak Entry

Carved in white oak, these massive doors are deceptive in size and balance. This entry is scaled up, as are many parts of this residence. (The client owned a NBA team) The doors are over 10' in height. The hand carved ornament in the upper panels is not planted on. It is carved at the same time as the panels from a single solid lamination of white Oak. The interior shares the same detailing and form as shown in the second photo. Hardware was modified to accommodate the scale and height. Interior surface mount cremone bolts add to the period feel of the project. To swing the 300lb panels, five five-inch ball bearing hinges were attached to a hidden steel frame in the jambs. Original design and carving by Phill Pittman.
