"Tree of Life" Mantel The Gothic origin of this massive piece is not lost to the "tree of life coming from the mantel board. The individual burl panels behind the gothic tracery are over 1 foot wide to give you an idea of scale. Carved of Sugar pine in 1985, Phill put many forms of life in the limbs of the tree. The nesting birds are visible even in this photo. Non of the carvings in this portfolio are plant-ons. All ornament is carved from the same solid block as the background. The tree was carved from a single (laminated) block of sugar pine that was over six inches thick by twelve feet wide.
