This project was started with a ram's heard carved
years earlier that was used as a component of a custom table and
desk. The ram's head was to be used as the foundation for an offering
of some new architectural components that we wanted to incorporate
into the same design theme. It needed to be modified for its new
use, but kept recognizable as an integral part of the collection.
We can just as easily work with found art such as antiques you
the client already own. The process in the ram's head instance
is as
follows;
 |
Using a 3-d digitizing arm, we are able to accurately
reproduce significant points on an object to re-create it
in a CAD model. Laser scans are capable of fast accurate imaging,
but manipulation is very difficult after the model is acquired.
By drawing in CAD, the model file size is small and adjustments
or alterations are very easy in the hands of a competent modeler
and designer. We have no need to outsource any of our CAD
or CAM functions. (In fact we do contract modeling and programming
for other studios.) |
Once primary surfaces are digitized into CAD, the model can be manipulated in almost any manner imaginable including scaling, copying, mirroring, and distorting in one or two dimensions. |

The re-assembled ram's head has been modified
for it's new use. Years of carving experience produce the
right modifications for viewing from below with full impact,
as the original was carved as a leg for a library desk which
was much smaller scale and viewed from above. The new life
will be as a capital in a heroic scale bookcase in the same
room. Light will be from a different angle and surface textures
will have to be treated totally differently. There is much
more to a successful project than just making the shape. |
The rendering at this point is ready for
approval by the client and architect for scale and form. Finish
samples will be done on drop off from the actual production
wood to be used. Production time on this project from concept
to installation will be about 90 days. We are designing some
complementing pieces for this project that incorporate the
State Seal of Texas. |
